Thanks for AV123

August 28, 2008

Editor,

I wanted to thank you for your recent review of the AV123 x-series speakers. They are some of the highest-value speakers I’ve ever seen and you have to see them in person to believe how good the finish is. Your reviewer was quite correct that the quality of their sound and construction is far better than the price would suggest. I was also glad to see them named Reviewers’ Choice. As you can guess, I’m an owner myself and find your review affirming of my own conclusions. Please keep up the good work.

Outlaw?

August 22, 2008

Editor,

Are any of your writers going to cover any Outlaw Audio products in the next few months? I’m specifically interested in their amplifiers. I used to hear a lot about their amps and processors, but I rarely read about them now. Their website is updated, though, so I know they are still in business.

Tom

We have their newest monster amplifier in for review right now -- the Model 7900. It has seven channels each rated to deliver 300W and weighs 145 pounds. That should be an interesting read (review to be published on September 15). By comparison, on September 1 you’ll read about a Rotel amplifier that weighs a scant 11 pounds. Talk about different design approaches!...Jeff Fritz

Oppo or Toshiba?

August 6, 2008

To Wes Marshall,

Could you please comment on the picture/upconverting ability of the Oppo DV-983H versus a Toshiba HD-XA2 (with the Silicon Optix Reon HQV)? I can get a used HD-XA2 for about the same price as a new Oppo DV-983H. Which is a better buy?

Lam

I have no hands-on experience with the Toshiba. Of course, HD DVD is dead, so you’d basically be buying a DVD player that would be able to play whatever HD DVDs you can find at garage sales. And it’s used. Plus, they are going for less than the Oppo. The Oppo plays SACD, DVD-A, and most importantly, all those great Asian films that aren’t Zone 1. I still think the best way to go is the Oppo -- or a Sony PS3....Wes Marshall
