More on Oppo
March 13, 2007
To Wes Marshall,
I enjoyed reading your Oppo
DV-981HD review. I have read enough about the Marantz DV-9600. Then came the
heartbreak: the price, even on eBay, went into another planet. I swallowed my pride, the
bitter pill. My solution was to look into the Oppo 970HD. I almost bought from Amazon. I
got an e-mail from an eBay seller mentioning the 981HD. So I have started researching the
981HD, leading to your review.
The Oppo site recommends "careful calibration"
for DLP rear-projection TVs such as mine. Do you have any comments or hints to that
effect? I am little concerned about that.

Fear not. All they are talking about is if you have the
ability to do pixel-to-pixel mapping, and you should have the ability to do so with your
set. And you will be ecstatic with your purchase. Its a great machine

HDMI compliant gear
March 7, 2007
To Wes Marshall,
I read your review of
the Oppo DV-981HD, and you said, And if youre one of the lucky few whose
processor or receiver will accept SACD and DVD-A via HDMI, the DV-981HD is one of the
first players to offer you that signal -- finally, directly, and in a digital state.
Can you please tell me which receivers can do this?
Im upgrading into the HD world but with as few cable
connections as possible. (Ideally with two HDMI cables).
Peter V.
Heres a list of companies with products that
partially allow HDMI. Things are changing fast, so my best advice would be to check your
favorite companys website to see if they will accept DVD-A and SACD via HDMI.
Arcam
Bang & Olufsen
Denon
Integra/Integra Research
Krell
Marantz
Meridian
Onkyo
Pioneer
Sony
Yamaha
Hope this helps

Budget projector
March 2, 2007
To Wes Marshall,
I just read your review
of the Mitsubishi HC3000. I am in the market for a budget projector to hold me over
until 1080p comes down in a few years. It will need to do 80% movie, 20% daytime sports
duty and I noticed there are many strong offerings right around $1000. The HC1000 is
roughly $1500 now with its little brother, the HD1000, being around $900 (the Hitachi
PJ-TX100 is $600 for a limited time). Would you recommend one of these for my situation or
something else?
Cory Potts
Between your choices, I would go, without hesitation,
for the HC3000. It has a gorgeous picture, incredible blacks and enough light for Sunday
football. Also take a look at the Panasonic PT AX-100U. Its $1999, but it has more
light than anything else close to the price, and Panasonic really has figured out how to
completely eradicate any signs of pixels, the usual bugaboo of LCDs
