Cheap home theater

October 16, 2006

To Doug Schneider,

Do you think that I can buy a home-theater system for less than $400? Is it possible? Will it be any good? What do you recommend?

Dwayne Miller

While you probably can buy a home-theater system for $400, I can almost guarantee you that it won’t be any good. The electronics will be cheap, and the speakers just as cheap. And when I use the word “cheap,” I don’t just mean "inexpensive"; I mean "bad." In fact, there used to be an online magazine called CheapHomeTheater.com, which I always thought was a lousy name. And the last time I typed that URL into my browser, it no longer came up. It looks like many others agreed with me.

Anyway, you’re not going to get something that inexpensive and good. Save a little longer and spend a little more, and you’ll more than likely get something quite a bit better....Doug Schneider

Get Sony?

October 11, 2006

To Doug Schneider,

I’m shopping for a projector and saw your write-up on the new Sony model. You seem impressed by it. Should this be the one I get?

Richard Pasher

I suspect you’re referring to the Sony VPL-VW50 projector that we covered at CEDIA Expo 2006. Yes, I was impressed -- VERY impressed. In fact, if I had an extra $5000 kicking around (which I don’t), I’d buy one. I suspect it should be on the top of your shopping list. Let me know how it turns out….Doug Schneider
