HD DVD or Blu-ray disc?

June 13, 2006

Editor,

If you were buying an HD video player today, which one would you choose? Or would you buy one at all?

Roger

I think I would wait just a while longer. The HD wave is almost here, with players everywhere and prices falling fast. There is no question about that. But it is still some months off, and the first players out of the gates are expensive and just a touch glitchy. I think you would maximize your dollar and enhance your long-term enjoyment of the new formats if you proceeded with a bit of caution….Jeff Fritz

Multiple subs – thanks!

June 2, 2006

To Doug Blackburn,

I just wanted to send you an e-mail and essentially say thank you for an article you wrote in your "Video Noise" column, "Subwoofers (and Bass) for Home Theater," some years back, regarding the use of multiple subwoofers.

I haven't located another article that addresses this topic anywhere on the Internet. But I've known about your article for years, and have always planned to add additional subwoofers to my home theater as a result of reading it. I have recently done so progressively over the last few months. I just wanted to say thanks, as it was the single most exciting upgrade I've made to my home theater. I wouldn't' have even thought about it if it wasn't for your article.

I originally had an Hsu VTF-2 for my LFE channel, and I liked the sub so much that about six months ago I added one to my surround channels with great results. Just last week I purchased a third VTF-2 to use for my center channel. With only the LFE and center sub at the moment (unfortunately my surround subwoofer had to go back to Hsu for repairs), I'm astounded by how much more exciting my home theater has gotten. It's closer to the real thing than I've ever achieved with any other upgrade. Movies have gotten so much more exciting and involving. And I'm expecting my third sub (surround-channel sub) to arrive next week, so it can only get better!

Andrew
