Which Ayre?
May 31, 2005
To Wes Marshall,
I enjoy your reviews, and depend on them. Can you give me a
one-word answer to this question? I have a Dwin TransVision 3 Enhanced DLP Projection
system. Assuming price is not a factor, and that the DVI inputs to the Dwin are used,
would you prefer the Ayre D-1x to the DX-7
with regard to the video experience only?
Peter G. Weiner
The single-word answer is, no. The D-1x is superb in
every way, but you would be paying a lot for the D/A circuitry that would be unnecessary
if you were using the DVI outputs, and the DX-7 has as good a picture as you will ever
find using DVI. The multiword answer is, you'd love the D-1x's ability to play CDs and you
can also configure it with DVI. I'd personally love either unit....Wes Marshall
Omnisat 6 system?
May 23, 2005
To Doug Schneider,
Do you still recommend the Mirage
Omnisat 6 speaker system?
Paul Georges
I still like the Omnisat 6 home-theater system that I
reviewed back in 2002; however, Mirage has just released a new "v2" version of
the Omnisat, and has added a floorstanding speaker to the lineup called the Omnisat v2 FS.
I have both the original and new Omnisats here and will be writing about them over on SoundStage! A/V soon....Doug

Multiple Blade Runners
May 17, 2005
To Wes Marshall,
I am looking for the original version of Blade Runner as a gift and am not having much luck. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated!
Sal
There is supposed to be a three-disc version out some
time this year with three versions of the film -- original, director's and a new one. It
was supposed to have been released last year, so who knows. Let's keep our fingers
crossed....Wes Marshall
A "dose of sanity"
May 2, 2005
Editor,
I was thoroughly pleased with your editorial, "The
Wait for High-Definition DVD." This editorial represents the most practical,
level-head approach I've yet encountered with regard to the impending (at some point in
time) arrival of some (?) form of high-definition DVD. As presently configured, DVD is
excellent, particularly with regard to multichannel audio. I, for one, appreciate the
vastly improved audio almost as much as the excellent video. DVD is a wonderful archival
medium. Significant, too, is the fact that the cost of DVDs has remained modest. As a
result, I have, in a surprisingly short time, managed to accumulate a collection in excess
of 350 DVDs. Thanks for a dose of sanity.
