"Keep up the good work"

November 25, 2003

Editor,

I just read you latest editorial, "Decisions: Why It's Hard to Make 'em in Today's Market," and I thought I would tell you that I find your opinions well versed and from the heart. It's a pleasant surprise to find someone "in the business" that has enthusiasm and an honest approach, and has kept it up for what looks like some time now. Keep writing and watching movies, and keep up the good work.

Karen McCarry

Thanks! It's easy to do something you love, and I am head over heels for this hobby....Jeff Fritz

Loves Ayre, needs projector

November 14, 2003

To Wes Marshall,

I have the Ayre D-1x and I really appreciated your review of it. The Perfect Vision reviewed it and then after a year they kept talking about other DVD players and seemed to forget the Ayre player. Now they keep raving about the Krell DVD Standard and didn't even compare the picture and audio to a player they once said was the best out there at any price point. It almost made me buy the Krell, but I just love my Ayre too much. After reading your article, it made me feel comfortable with my Ayre once again. I appreciate that.

I do have a question for you though. I noticed that you have a Boxlight 20HD projector. I am looking at buying the 50HD or the 20HD and I can't make up my mind. I have a 92" widescreen Stewart FireHawk screen, and I was wondering what you thought of the 20HD. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff

I did a review of the 20HD. I would be a little afraid of using it on a 92" screen unless you are sitting about 18 feet away. Any closer and the screen-door effect becomes bothersome. With that said, it makes a bright picture with vivid colors and offers all sorts of convenience features. Price aside, I would lean toward the 50HD because of its Mustang 2 chipset. But since I haven't had one in my house, I would have to get one of each to try them side by side. Check my review for a comparison between the 20HD and a DLP projector from InFocus.

The one area where the 20HD stomps the competition is in its total user interface (not just graphics but setup and use, as well). I think the DLP picture is a little clearer. Can you get a loaner on either? That's the best approach. Or at least buy from a store that allows returns.

Let us know what you do....Wes Marshall

Onkyo Net-Tune

November 10, 2003

Editor,

Is it only the very newest Onkyo receivers that offer Net-Tune, or do some older models offer this feature? I noticed that the model you reviewed, the TX-SR800, does not have that feature.

Robert Taylor

Onkyo just now, at the end of October, released their second Net-Tune-equipped receiver -- the TX-SR801. I think you can expect for this feature to trickle into all their receivers over the next year or so. At this point only the SR801 and SR900 are equipped with Net-Tune so if you're looking at older receivers you'll not see it....Jeff Fritz

Which InFocus?

November 3, 2003

Editor,

You stated in your last letter that you would have a review of the InFocus X1 projector, which is great because it's is a product I'm looking at purchasing. However, on your list of coming reviews, you mention the InFocus 7200. Did you make a mistake or are you reviewing both? There is a huge difference in price between the two.

Mark Brandon

You're very perceptive! We will have reviews of both InFocus projectors. You can look for the 7200 review to be published December 1st....Jeff Fritz
