Letters to the Editor - December 2000

December 25, 2000

Editor,

Hola and congratulations for an interesting site (like you always produce). My brother has a DVD player and TV set capable of accepting a component video cable as well as the regular S-video and composite. I recommended to him a component cable for a better image. Does he need a dedicated component cable or will any given set of three 75-ohm cables do the trick?

Jose Garcia

Component video, S-Video and composite video all carry the same range of frequencies. Any good composite cable will also be a good S-Video cable and a good component video cable. Of course, S-Video has a different connector. But composite and component connections both use RCA plugs most of the time so the cables are the same. You do not need to get any "special" cable for component video.

However, when you change to HDTV resolution, video cables must carry more and higher frequencies. So today's video cables may or may not be good for HDTV -- some existing cable designs have excellent frequency response, far higher than is needed for today's video sources. But some cables will have significant losses at the higher frequencies you need for HDTV.

But for today's DVD connections to a normal television set, any good video cable will work perfectly for component video connections....Doug Blackburn

Editor,

I'd greatly appreciate it if you could tell me if a review of the Musical Fidelity preamp/processor is going to happen anytime soon.

Regards,

S. Nguyen

We would very much like to review the Musical Fidelity processor, although it is not scheduled at this time. We have a number of equipment reviews just around the corner, though, so keep a close watch....Jeff Fritz

Editor,

Congratulations. I look forward to reading your e-pub twice a month. No publication, to my knowledge, has yet reviewed the new Bryston SP1 preamp-processor.

Best wishes,

George Bennett

We want to cover processors in depth, and the Bryston does look promising. Stay tuned!... Jeff Fritz

Editor,

Glad to see SoundStage! tackle home theater full bore. I have one request. Would you guys review Legacy Audio? I see their ads everywhere but cannot seem to find many reviews. Looking forward  to watching you grow and become the leader in home theater.

Rod Shepard

Thanks! We are looking forward to providing the best home-theater coverage on the Internet. Stay tuned for much more! Regarding Legacy, they have some very nice home-theater products. We will inquire about a review....Jeff Fritz
