Our Picks for the Best DVDs of 2006

It’s hard to believe that another year has passed and that we are now past the midpoint of the 21st century’s first decade. Perhaps watching some very good DVDs has made the time pass more quickly. Below is the list of our reviewing and editorial staff’s picks for the best DVD releases of 2006. Not all of these discs contain feature films. Many "Best DVDs" lists might as well be "Best Movies" lists; ours applies to the DVD format itself, not the original medium of any given disc’s content -- which may, as you’ll see, have been a feature film, a documentary, a TV series or miniseries, or a concert.

In making our choices, we took into account the qualities of many things: the original production, the video and audio transfers, and the accompanying extras. In some cases, such as Match Point, a superb drama and impeccable transfer carried the day; in others, such as The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, a batch of tricked-out extras helped make a B-title indispensable for HD DVD fans. Each year we see an increase in the number of first-rate titles, and choosing just a few becomes more difficult. Here’s the list.
