The Scroogiest of Them All!

Since we knew that Anthony Di Marco was writing a feature on Charles Dickens and his most famous creation, Ebenezer Scrooge, we decided to ask our writers and editors to vote for their favorite onscreen rapacious creditor. They saw the list that Di Marco used, but not his results. Here are their picks -- compare them to "DVD Roundup" to see the results.

With five votes each, two Brits and one American took first place:

  • Michael Caine: The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) Walt Disney Home Video
  • Albert Finney: Scrooge (1970) Paramount
  • George C. Scott: A Christmas Carol (TV-1984) 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

With four votes apiece, two Brits and one American took second place:

  • Bill Murray: Scrooged (1988) Paramount
  • Alastair Sim: A Christmas Carol (1951) VCI Home Video
  • Patrick Stewart: A Christmas Carol (TV-1999) Warner Home Video

Third place went to four actors, all given two votes each:

  • Jim Backus: Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol (1962) Sony Music
  • Reginald Owen: A Christmas Carol (1938) MGM
  • Jack Palance: Ebenezer (TV-1997) Platinum Disc Corporation
  • Henry Winkler: An American Christmas Carol (1979) Image Entertainment

All of the performances and titles listed are available on DVD except Reginald Owen's A Christmas Carol, and our guess is that MGM will bring that out by the end of next year.
